BIO: Stone faced. The act of showing no emotion, or as Chicago’s Stone Faced Gremlin puts it, being too knowledgeable about all sides of a subject or situation to have either a happy or a sad face about it. All in all, being stone faced is a recognition of neutrality. “I came up with the name Stone Faced Gremlin because I’m not the type to wear my heart on my sleeve,” he explains, “I keep a stone face.” His heart, however, can be seen and heard loud and clear in Stone Faced Gremlin’s music.
Although in his personal life he feels it’s safest to remain mysterious at first, in his rhymes it’s clear what Stone Faced Gremlin is all about. Of course, he wasn’t always so stone faced. The name is one he actually chose quite recently upon his signing with Urchin Records. Originally his name was Antimatter and he was part of a group called Impact that included his childhood friend Phoreign Threat. After signing a solo deal Stone Faced Gremlin felt it was the perfect time to destroy and rebuild. A new chapter had opened up in his life and he wanted to mark it by showing the world another side of himself many had never seen before.
Growing up on the South side of Chicago, Stone Faced Gremlin started writing rhymes at the age of 13. His progression as an MC can be linked to who he was listening to at different stages in his life. Starting as a fan of mainstream Hip-Hop Stone Faced Gremlin was listening to the likes of the Cash Money and No Limit rosters. As the years passed he would be drawn artists such as Nas and Public Enemy. The dual influences of both mainstream commercial rap music and thought provoking MCs swirled around in his head until he came to the conclusion that would come to define his style – Stone Faced Gremlin would combine them. “I saw the possibilities and how music wasn’t just something to dance to and bob your head to, you can really release what’s inside and discuss what you really want to spread to people.”
Describing himself as a logical thinker, Stone Faced Gremlin’s lyrics can vary greatly and in the span of just one verse can range from sarcastic, arrogant humor to deep thought provoking content, all done with the rhythmic flow he found essential to any mainstream rap song. He notes “mainstream rap has a tendency to focus on rhythm, regardless of if the lyrics are thought provoking or stimulating.” Stone Faced Gremlin is throwing thought provoking lyrics in there anyways, hoping to get a few messages across while listeners are having a good time. You might also catch him playing some guitar on a track or two, as well, as he has a strong passion for classic rock and has been known to play a little himself.
At only 19 years of age many artists would find throwing themselves into the highly competitive world of rap music to be a daunting task, but not Stone Faced Gremlin, he’s been motivated by the act of telling himself day in and day out that he’s the best MC out there. “I literally started rapping thinking that I was the best that ever did it,” he explains, “and that attitude has helped me keep going because each level I got on, no matter how good I was or how good I would be in the future, I was thinking yeah man, I’m the hottest there is.”
With an album teeming with his intricate mix of mainstream rhythms and socially conscious ideologies the world is about to see exactly what kind of heat Stone Faced Gremlin is bringing.
